What is a medical weight loss program?

A medical weight loss program is a weight management plan supervised by a licensed physician. Instead of a one-size-fits-all diet, your treatment is based on your health history, body composition and goals. Depending on your needs, it can include prescription medications such as GLP-1 therapies, nutrition coaching, lifestyle guidance and ongoing follow-up visits.

Who is it for?

Medical weight loss may be a good fit if you have struggled to lose weight with diet and exercise alone, or if excess weight is affecting your health.

For prescription GLP-1 medications, candidates generally have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher along with at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnea.

Not everyone is a candidate. Certain medical conditions, including a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, pregnancy or planning to become pregnant, and some digestive conditions, may make these medications unsafe. Whether treatment is right for you is decided by your physician after a full evaluation, which is why every patient starts with a medical consultation.

Your Step-by-Step Journey to Long-Term Weight Loss

Discover what happens from your first consultation to maintaining your results with physician-guided care.

Your Journey Starts Here

Every patient is different. That’s why we begin by understanding your health history, lifestyle, and weight loss goals before creating a customized treatment plan.

What Happens During Your First Visit?

Your first visit takes about 60 minutes. Here is what to expect:

  1. You meet with DR.Gayatri  Patel M.D , a board-certified physician.
  2. We review your medical history, including current medications, past weight loss attempts and any conditions that affect treatment.
  3. We analyze your body composition using a body composition scan, so we know your starting point for body fat and muscle mass.
  4. We discuss your goals, from the amount of weight you want to lose to how you want to feel day to day.
  5. We build your personalized treatment plan and explain the next steps, schedule and costs before you decide anything.

Your Customized Treatment Plan

Every plan is customized. Depending on your needs, your program may include:

  • GLP-1 medications. Physician-prescribed options such as semaglutide and tirzepatide when they are medically appropriate for you.
  • Nutrition coaching that fits your schedule, preferences and health needs.
  • Lifestyle recommendations for movement, sleep and daily habits.
  • Progress tracking at every visit.
  • Regular physician follow-ups, every  weeks, to adjust your plan as your body responds.

How do we track your progress?

The scale only tells part of the story. At your monthly visits, we monitor body fat, muscle mass and waist measurements, along with your energy levels and overall health improvements. This helps us aim for fat loss while protecting your lean muscle, and it shows progress even in weeks when the scale doesn’t move.

What results can you expect?

Results vary from person to person and depend on your health, your treatment plan and how consistently you follow it. Here is what many patients experience:

  • Weeks 1 to 4: Your body adjusts to treatment. You start at a low dose, and some patients notice changes in appetite or hunger. Mild digestive side effects can occur as your dose increases.
  • Weeks 4 to 12: Your physician gradually adjusts your dose. Many patients begin to see steady changes in weight, measurements and energy, though the pace differs for everyone.
  • Around 12 to 16 weeks: We review your progress together and decide whether your plan is working or needs to change.

We do not promise specific outcomes, but we do promise a clear plan and regular check-ins so you always know where you stand.

What happens after you reach your goal?

Reaching your goal is only the beginning. Our maintenance program helps you build habits that last, with ongoing follow-up visits, nutrition support and regular monitoring so you can keep your results for years to come.

Once you reach your goal, your physician reviews your progress and decides what comes next. Depending on your health and how your body responds, your plan may include:

  • Adjusting your dose gradually to the level that helps you maintain your weight.
  • Continuing treatment at a maintenance dose if that is what’s right for you.
  • Tapering or stopping medication only under your physician’s guidance, and never abruptly. Weight regain and returning hunger are common after stopping these medications, so a plan matters.
  • Less frequent follow-up visits once your progress is stable.
  • Ongoing nutrition and lifestyle support to protect your muscle and keep your habits strong.

Every patient is different, so your maintenance plan is built around you. Please don’t change or stop your medication without talking to your physician first.

Frequently asked questions

1. How much does medical weight loss cost in Orlando?

At Orlando Medical Weight Loss, your first visit is $99 and includes a doctor visit and a 3D body scan. Treatment plans are $399 per month or $100 per week, and both include weekly medication, custom vitamin booster shots and 3D body scans. A $149 per month maintenance plan is also available. There are no contracts or hidden fees. Prices as of November 2026.

2. What happens at my first visit?

You meet with a board-certified physician for about 60 minutes. We review your medical history and current medications, complete a 3D body composition scan, discuss your goals, and build a personalized plan. You’ll know the next steps and costs before you decide anything.

3. Who qualifies for GLP-1 weight loss medication?

Candidates generally have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Your physician makes the final decision after reviewing your health history. Some conditions, including a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, may make these medications unsafe.

4. What is the difference between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?

Both are prescription medications that reduce appetite and support weight loss alongside lifestyle changes. Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 hormone, while tirzepatide acts on both GLP-1 and GIP hormones. Your physician will explain which option fits your health and goals. Learn more on our semaglutide and tirzepatide pages.

5. How long does it take to see results?

Results vary by person. Treatment starts at a low dose that your physician increases gradually, so many patients notice changes in appetite first, then steady changes in weight and measurements over the following weeks. Around 12 to 16 weeks, your physician reviews your progress and decides whether your plan is working or needs to change.

6. What are the side effects?

Common side effects of GLP-1 medications include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and stomach discomfort, which are often mild and ease as your body adjusts. Less common but serious risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Your physician will review the risks with you and monitor you throughout treatment, and you should call us if you have severe or lasting symptoms.

7. Do I have to visit the clinic every week?

We recommend weekly check-ins for the best results, but flexible and virtual options are available. Evening and weekend appointments are offered on request, and medication can be shipped to your home for a small fee.

8. Does insurance cover medical weight loss?

Most insurance plans do not cover weight loss treatment, so our pricing is designed to be affordable without insurance. Your plan price includes your weekly medication. Primary care patients receive $50 off per month.

9. What happens when I stop taking the medication?

Weight regain and returning hunger are common after stopping GLP-1 medications. That’s why your physician plans your next step with you, which may include a lower maintenance dose, a gradual taper or a maintenance plan. Please don’t change or stop your medication without talking to your physician first.
